My opinion is similar to dntx
I think this cute cartoon style should try to avoid jagged edges.
A typical example is the work of Ghost Shit. He does not use rectangular color blocks at all in his works.
Make the outline of the cartoon neat and perfect so that it feels cute
If there are too many jagged edges in such a large area of color, it will look a bit messy.
One of the flexible techniques mentioned by jimkeen is suitable for realism
In comic works, it is suitable for near-realistic comics with rich light and shadow effects.
For example, the highlights and shadows of hair, the specific expression of the texture of eyes and clothes.
As jimkeen said, the randomness and freedom of Chinese painting and ink painting are also very suitable for expression using this technique.
An example is the black horse imported from Taiwan. Its mane and tail are very realistic.
I have always wanted to draw a horse with the effect of Chinese painting. It is basically the same effect as his.
In fact, the techniques of asciiart and the techniques of painting with pens have something in common.
Look at the freehand brushwork of traditional Chinese painting, which is rough and even pursues the burrs and thorny lines drawn with dry brushes.
In cartoons, it is extremely rare to have rough lines, and we strive to keep the lines simple and round.
